Is Stress Killing You?

According to the American Institute of Stress, “Stress is the basic cause of 60% of all human illness and disease. 3 out of 4 doctors visits are for stress related ailments! Extreme stress events reduce grey matter of the brain in regions associated with emotion and physiological function…meaning stress shrinks the brain.

44% of Americans feel more stressed than 5 years ago. 1 in 5 Americans experience “extreme stress” (shaking, heart palpitations, depression).

There are multiple reasons that people experience stress. Whether it be physical, emotional, or chemical stressors, they create havoc throughout your body and overstimulate your brain.

The physiological definition of stress is “a specific response by the body to stimulus, as fear or painthat disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism.” Improper spinal movement and vertebral restriction may literally be “stressing” you to disease!

Improper movements, or restriction of spinal joints, has been scientifically proven to increase stress hormones and decrease relaxing hormones through increased sympathetic tone, AKA, fight or flight physiology. (Korr 1976)

Why is this bad? This creates a cascade of autonomic processes as if the body is being constantly attacked! When this is sustained over a long period of time it can lead to issues from a decrease in immunity and digestion to shutting down fertility, focus, attention, and energy!

“The spine and structure of the body have 90% of the connections to the brain and nervous system” -Dr. Irvin Korr, PhD Neurophysiology

90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine” -Roger Sperry, 1981 Nobel Prize Winner, Neuropsychologist & Neurobiologist
